Expressive Quilled Paper Illustrations and Portraits by Yulya Brodskaya

Yulya Brodskaya is a highly regarded paper artist and illustrator from Moscow, Russia and now currently residing in London, U.K. She is fascinated with the longstanding age-old art of Quilling. It is a form of art that involves the use of bent and rolled strips of papers to create beautiful paper arts. This art has been around since renaissance time, or even earlier. It has been the regular pastime for noble ladies during their leisure time.

With just assorted colored papers and glue, Brodskaya was able to come up with numerous impressive illustrations, typography, and even portraits. Lots of paper craft enthusiasts has been using this style but Brodskaya is indeed one of the top-notch artists in this category. Her vibrant and very detailed style will surely captivate you at first glance. Her process so tedious that there is simply no room for mistakes. Her pieces are very precise in size and position; once she glues a piece on the board, there is no going back.

According to her, this process is really quite simple that anyone can learn it with ease. But the real challenge for this one is that it is very time consuming. One should have tons of patience and passion for this art or else it will just be plain torture.

“Paper always held a special fascination for me. I’ve tried many deferent methods and techniques of working with it, until I found the way that has turned out to be ‘the one’ for me: now I draw with paper instead of on it.”

Soon after discovering his talent for paper arts. She was recognized as the “breakthrough star” of 2009 by Creative Review magazine. Earning an international reputation for her innovative paper art masterpieces resulting into huge amount of invitations from various design conferences and design schools around the world. She has also built a formidable list of clients like Cadbury, Hermes, Target, Nokia, Ferrero and a lot more.

Now that Brodskaya has mastered her style very well, she is now working on a new series of paper crafts focusing on complex subjects especially portraits of aging and older people. She loves portraying them in a brilliant and colorful way; utilizing the paper strips’ appearance to add depth and textures to her creations.
