Icons Unmasked—What’s Beneath Our Favorite Characters’ Masks?

“Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask.”

Ooops. Wrong villain. HA HA HA

We have this interesting fascination with masks. Ever since the dawn of history, humans have used masks to disguise themselves, to conceal deformities, or to protect themselves from predators. But we all need to know who is beneath the mask.

Tyrion Lannister once asked Jon Snow referring to the Wall “Why is that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what is on the other side?” Jon Snow replied “It’s nothing special.”

V from V for Vendetta also said “You wear a mask for so long, you forget who you were beneath it.” And sometimes, people think they could get on with their villainous masked machinations if it isn’t for you meddling kids.

But enough with the pop culture mask references.

Alex Solis from CargoCollective played with some of our favorite characters and showed us what’s behind their masks in his set of illustrations Icons Unmasked.

In a hilarious take on unmasking cultural icons from Detective Comics’ Batman to Dragonball Z’s  Son Goku, Solis showed us a deconstruction of the Cool Mask trope. Who might be beneath the mask is not who we think at all.
