17 Christmas Portrait Ideas

by . December 12th, 2014

There are a plethora of activities to be done during the holidays. But for us photographers, photographing and capturing the spirit of the holidays is one of the best things to do. We can photograph the sumptuous Christmas feast, create landscape photos of the place we are spending our vacation in, and take a nice family portrait.

Taking family portraits can be fun but it can also be down right exhausting if you don’t have any idea what to do. This is why we here at YouThePhotographer would like to keep your holidays stress-free by presenting you some holiday photo ideas that you can do with your family.

We have collected a variety of photographs that you can use as a springboard for ideas. Not only that, we have added some tips on how to make your holiday portraits—and the actual session itself—more fun for you and your family.

Tip 1: Bring out props for the kids — How about adding a book? A candy cane? A snowman? Add a little story to your photo. It can also make the portrait look more fun and festive and have that candid feel to it.

Tip 2: Make use of those colorful lights and turn them into lovely bokeh — A burst of color from Christmas lights certainly gives the seemingly cold snow-laden background or bland room that much need festive feel to it.

Tip 3: Don’t forget your pets — Pets are family too so why not include them in the shoot as well and for the added cute factor try dressing them up.

Tip 4: Shooting under the snow — A light snowfall can make any portrait appear more magical. Just be mindful of your gear if its not weather-sealed.

Tip 5: Go Bonkers! — Forget the warm, fuzzy Christmas feeling. Why not opt for something wild and hilarious — after all, aren’t we supposed to enjoy the holidays?
