If you have good work it doesn't mean you are a good designer. It might be just luck or you are good at what you have done, but do not have the knowledge to do other sorts of designs and projects. And if you have the knowledge, you have to practice that knowledge before even calling yourself a designer.

In the end, the combination of both makes you a designer, yet they should be culminated with enough experience to make you a good designer.

So eh, I guess the degree doesn't really matter. Just today I briefly came across a designer who started his career before having the chance to go for a degree.

For what i see, some people can get into the creative industry with work, creativity and knowledge, but i think that a degree is always a plus, dealing with fellow students and teachers gives you a lot of knowledge exchange, i know i grew a lot during my degree. When i look at my works from the 1st year, my reaction is "*facepalm* what is this?!?"

Also almost every company only hires creatives with a degree.

You can get into industry with out the degree for sure but i would recommend having a degree is good, it just works like your back up and keeps your Resume strong as well, so my opinion would be you should have degree whether or not you are in industry

@Edgar, I feel the same way about my work from before school. Most of the work I have from then, which is unfortunetely most of the work I have on here, is being taken out of my portfolio or being redone with the knowledge and skill I have gained from my classes and fellow classmates. So Lorna, I would have to say that having a degree is definitely beneficial. The process can make you a more effective designer, while the degree and your portfolio help you compete in the market.
