Do you pay attention to whether or not you use OpenType in your designs? Why would you?

I was recently asked about the benefits of OpenType. Now, I understand that using OpenType allows for higher manipulative capabilities in Illustrator, InDesign, and Flash. But, I couldn't see this being the only reason OpenType fonts would be used since type is so easy to manipulate in these programs already. Does anyone have any further insight on this topic?

My employer switch all our fonts to OpenType many years ago and I didn't understand why exactly either at the time but from my understanding, it allowed copy to flow better and create overall, just better looking copy with less effort.

It is probably more important in the editorial side of things where lots of small type can look and read very differently with only small changes. Designers using smaller amounts of copy and usually larger wouldn't probably notice much except for some fonts seemed kerned better in OpenType vs. TrueType and most likely the more refined kerning and usually added glyphs for use per font.

Another advantage is the OpenType fonts run cross platform so it is especially good if you are sharing your work with others or collaborating so you can package the fonts and know they will work on Mac, Windows or Linux.
