With a little talk showing up about social networks and Facebook in particular, I was wondering how others with Facebook accounts use them? Do you keep it personal or use it for everything?

Personally, when I first jumped on to Facebook, I dabbled with almost everything. I played games, liked everything that related to things I actually like and I left the door open for anyone who wanted to be my friend. Then, things changed.

Soon I realized all those things I had liked became annoying because they started showing up in my newsfeed. Now days you can like something and choose to hide it from your newsfeed but, all your friends will likely see ads pop up based on things you had liked and not so much stuff they liked. Knowing this and how Facebook wants to target ads to us based on likes, I opted to delete most of my likes that were based on any brand or non personal things.

Then I had spammers show up in my friends list sending me messages with links to porn sites. That ended the open door for anyone to become a friend. I opted to only keep people in my friends list that were already there and not making a nuisance of themselves and close friends and family. I had already had a Google+ account so like many others, I decided to make Google+ the place where I interacted with people outside my close group of friends and family.

For me, Facebook is personal. I only go there to interact with people I know. I don't shop there, don't follow websites there, and don't follow fan pages there. I would rather not have my newsfeed mucked up with anything other than mindless chatter amongst family and friends which can be way too much itself sometimes to keep up with.

I have a nice long list of RSS feeds, lots of people in Google+ circles and Twitter peeps I follow and those are what I rely on for info and interaction outside of my personal group of friends and family.

I know many of my friends and coworkers have adopted the same idea especially as Facebook becomes more about making money and less about people. How do the rest of you use Facebook?

I mainly use Facebook for personal purposes connecting to my family and friends. I use other social sites like UCreative and my website for other things like work and my art.

Well, i have both... My personal and my facebook.com/edgaralmeida.net for work and design/photography related links. That way, no problem mixing things up. ;)

Im with Edgar. I have my personal profile, and then I have my page which is for design/business stuff.

you are actually very true here.. Facebook is becoming marketing site..

Nothing is personal now. Things can be shared to others and expressions are shared to added ones.
