Okay, I was recommended to make an "online" portfolio, which I could easily do, but my problem is that I'm worried about putting work on my site that could possibly harm my website and its reputation as a freelance web designer.

What should  I put in my portfolio that won't harm me? Most of my work is fake, or work that I randomly did, and I only have one that's actually and considerably real work.

Please provide your suggestions, everyone.

Thanks,

Jarod Billingslea

When you say "fake", you are referring to the work being not for a client, correct? If so, you can still use the work. If you are putting any type of descriptions to your pieces, just make sure to put what medium they are in and how they could fulfill a client's needs. Take a look at my S.O.S. designs as an example. As of now, these are in my portfolio. However, they were only academic studies for client based designs. In my design descriptions, I state that they are academic studies and what the the potential client wanted and needed. Just don't use anything that would make other interpret you differently than who you actually are as a designer. That would greatly hurt your reputation. Does this help?

The point is. "its your work", we can say that it's fake when you just copied it from other designers. Making an online portfolio doesnt mean just putting the projects you made to a client, but rather put all your artworks on it. In order for people to know your capacity as a designer.

A quick tip for portfolio's: More is not necessarily better. "fake" or not "fake" Make sure that you put only your strongest pieces on your site. 5 great pieces are better than 20 mediocre ones.
Thanks for the advice Tesani, and should I have some sort of description for my non-client work, as an excuse for why it's not a real website or company?
I dont think that it is necessary. People want to see your skills, unless you are taking on some high profile clients I dont think they care.

How could your work harm your Brand? Yes! real world work is good to have but personal work doesn't harm you in fact it can help, because you are able to show the full range of your abilities. If someone has never had a client request a Logo Mark, but they have created many in there personal port its okay to list them.

Alternatively you could set up an additional site with just a portfolio and contact information
