In the past, I have created the most of my realistic illustrations in Photoshop with my Wacom Intuous4. But here recently, I have been practicing with vector illustrations in Adobe Illustrator. There are three ways that I found to create shading: the gradient mesh tool, the traditional gradient tool, and the 3D revolve shading and lighting options. Which to you find to be the most successful in creating realistic illustrations?

I want to add another one that is layering. In some designs I used diffrent layer with different blending and it creates a smooth shading
