Yes, most companies in US want to see some type of educational background. Typically, most of the better jobs in graphic design require a 4 year bachelor degree in arts but it is possible to work your way into those jobs with less. Sometimes, an employer will consider accepting on job experience in place of education but sadly in today job market where "US is not the land of opportunities it once was" especially for creative jobs, you are often fighting against dozens or hundreds of other applicants for employment and the one with most qualifications including education will usually win.

I suggest going after at least a 2 year associate degree in commercial art if possible. That is the bottom line for graphic design education really in US. If you have the ability to get a 4 degree at a credible college, I highly recommend that. You might find some media companies that are willing to hire students in training or those with a little graphic design background but without the education or a fantastic portfolio and lots of experience, they probably won't be willing to pay a lot.

Thanks Dean for your kind suggestions.Yeah I definitely try to get some degree in Graphics. But for now can you also suggest what kind of fantastic portfolio should I make? I am working on my portfolio these days but I think your suggestion will make it more good. Like what should I make for my portfolio and on which side I work more to get better portfolio?

It all depends on what you type of graphic design job you seek. If you are more comfortable with printed design, then use examples of your work or create some examples that are geared towards advertising such as magazine, newspaper, brochures, business cards, logos etc. Look for printed work around you others have done and try to do something similar or take their designs and try to improve them.

If you are looking to get more into web graphics, then create some examples of website designs, advertising banners, user interfaces etc.

There are many different areas of graphic design and what you should put into your portfolio should only be your best examples of the type of media you intend to create or get hired to create. A mix of examples you have done in past for clients and examples you created just out of passion to be creative are both good to have.
