I am currently doing my 2nd year of studying Graphic Design.
I have recently been given an assignment to do research on any currently practising graphic designer, fine artist or photographer of our choice.
it would be greatly appreciated if a designer would take the time to answer the following few questions for my research assignment.

1. Firstly, tell me a little bit about yourself? E.g. Name, where you were born, birthday, where you studied etc.

2. What course did you study and what qualification did you get?

3. What inspired you to study this course?

4. What made you become a designer? (Please mention what type of designer you are.)

5. How did you discover your art/design talent?

6. Who or what inspires you?

7. Do you have a certain style? And what movement do you feel your style belongs in?

8. How does your work reflect the social, political, cultural ideas of its time?

9. What art/design movement do you feel we are in today?

10. Who or what is your most important influence?

Thanking you in advance,
Kristen

1. Firstly, tell me a little bit about yourself? E.g. Name, where you were born, birthday, where you studied etc.

Josten Dooley, I was born in North Carolina, My birthday is December 9th. I studied at the art Institute

2. What course did you study and what qualification did you get? I went for an associates degree in Graphic design. I realized that I would learn more for free and online then paying more in student loans. Also I felt real world experience is more valuable then sitting in a classroom.

3. What inspired you to study this course? Wanting to do skateboard deck designs

4. What made you become a designer? Nothing made me become a graphic designer I realized that its my passion and I have been doing it all throughout my life without knowing what it actually was.

5. How did you discover your art/design talent? By learning and seeing art

6. Who or what inspires you? Life, my dog, Nature, everything inspires me in some way.

7. Do you have a certain style? And what movement do you feel your style belongs in? I do not feel I have a certain style more so influenced by those who have came before me and those who are in the industry today. Also this quote resonates with my approach to design; Create your own visual style... let it be unique for yourself and yet identifiable for others. -Orson Well

8. How does your work reflect the social, political, cultural ideas of its time? My work reflects the problem that I solved with the final solution

9. What art/design movement do you feel we are in today? I see that we are heading back to the more simplistic design style and being more so influenced by apple seems to be apparent in many industries other then just technology.

10. Who or what is your most important influence? I'd have to say Charles and Ray Eames, Paul rand, Erik Spiekerman, Dieter Rams, and Steve Jobs. After I watched the documentary about Charles and Ray Eames I was forever seeing design through a different perspective and a more enjoyable way to go about designing.

Hope this helps.

Josten

1. Firstly, tell me a little bit about yourself? E.g. Name, where you were born, birthday, where you studied etc.

Hi! I'm Patrick Jude Ilagan born June 24, 1990 raised and studied in Manila, Philippines.

2. What course did you study and what qualification did you get?

I took up Fine Arts major in Advertising.

3. What inspired you to study this course?

Taking up Fine Arts was only a second choice since I'm not really that good at freehand drawing but since my family runs a small printing business I decided to take it up so I could handle it myself and maybe turn it into something big.

4. What made you become a designer? (Please mention what type of designer you are.)

I became a graphic designer since I grew up with pantone books, design and print production books (since my folks are in the printing business). Other than that I just love looking and creating designs that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

5. How did you discover your art/design talent?

I used to doodle a lot back when I was still a elementary student but I never really took it seriously since here in the Philippines people think that being a designer let alone being an artist is not really a job and it never really pays off unless you can paint hyper realism.

6. Who or what inspires you?

I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm not doing this for money and for the recognition but other than that I'm also doing this to be a better artist and to be a better person as well.

7. Do you have a certain style? And what movement do you feel your style belongs in?

I do a lot of vector art as of the moment but I would like to go back to my main passion which is travel photography. I loosely base my style to Dan Matutina, Matthew Lyons, Ben Templesmith, James Jean as of the moment since I do a lot of vector work but I also try and incorporate Mogdiliani's distorted anatomy and fusing it with neo-classical flourishings. In the near future I want to create my own style by infusing all of my favorite artists but for now I have to really practice and improve my work.

8. How does your work reflect the social, political, cultural ideas of its time?

My work is just as random and as spontaneous as the world that we are living right now, I may do a portrait next thing I know I'm working on a gig poster for a client. I currently have no theme yet but I'm trying to work out this series which tackles one major issue here in the Philppines which is our collective identity to the world and how our local tv is dumbing down the masses.

9. What art/design movement do you feel we are in today?

As of the moment I'm mixing pop-art and a little bit of Rococo since I do a lot of vector portraits which involves pop-art vibrant colors while combining the intricate flourishing of the Rococo period. Although there are days that I decided to go for Bauhaus.

10. Who or what is your most important influence?

My friends and fellow artists. Because every time I see them putting up a new work which is something totally new and better from their previous ones it somehow compels me to raise my skills a notch higher than my previous work.
