Experience is the best teacher. Is it?

Way back when there was no Digital Arts, Fashion Design or Multimedia courses (Photography was lucky to have workshops at least) creatives just learn their craft through merely experience and experiments. New generation is lucky to have books and schools about it but veterans says nothing beats the classic.

Is it advisable to go to a graphic design school and learn the theories or experience is enough to get things done?

All ideas are welcome!

I have to agree that it ultimately depends on the individual - I personally went to a good art school and got a formal education, but before I was able to do that I had to go to a smaller school just to get my GPA up before I transferred. It does take time, and a lot of work, but as good as some design tutorials may be, they don't teach you everything you need to know about Graphic Design.

I know that school isn't an option for everybody, so if that is the case, then just remember to brush up on the basics before diving into the deep end. I believe that it's important to know at least a little about the history of art and how it came to be over many centuries. It's also important to know about type, and layout, in addition to simply using Photoshop or Illustrator. There are fundamentals of design and color theory and it goes pretty deep. That being said, I don't feel that my education provided me with everything I needed to know, but it really helps to have a strong foundation whether it's through university education or private study.

having said that school gave you the fundamentals of design, color and art, it only shows that you will appreciate things more if you know the theories behind it and that your taste has basis. I think this is one reason why most clients prefer people who studied design or has a certificate at least.
@Maria Eya I think that's one main reason why other prefer learning outside of school. often times, schools are giving "traditional" concepts rather than modern technologies and techniques.
I personally think that the combination of school and outside experience has had a big effect on me. In school you are able to learn a lot from the teachers who have already been in the graphic design industry, also the students are always there to help you since they are going through exactly what you are. I spend a lot of time learning new techniques over the internet and books, I also have found graphic design blogs that can give me a lot of inspiration for my own projects. I think it is important to have a wide range of influences in order to keep up with our industry that is always changing.
Learning doesn't really end in school. There is always a lot to learn after that. Although there are things "real world" can teach you that you will never learn in school.
