traditional art and technology

Technology take old, traditional art to a new level. Is is a good thing or not?

I've noticed that there are lots of old classic paintings that are replicated. Some artworks are "recreated" and made into a new piece of art. They are brilliant and truly amazing. I'm wondering if this is something that favors traditional painters and artists or is it something that they just swallow coz they can't do anything about it?

I'm not an artist myself but i'd love to know how other people see this.

I think technology spread in any form of art or life and it is not a bad thing. I am addicted to it too.

I used to do traditional painting and still do but I mixed it with digital. I see computer as another medium.

I used to work with a well known illustrator of editorial cartoons and kids books. He worked with traditional tools such as ink and paints to create his work. His work always had to be digitized to be used in the publications he worked for and wasn't long when they asked him to take on this chore and to consider doing his work all in the digital format to make this easier.

He tried to do his work with a Wacom pen and tablet on the computer but wasn't happy with the results which probably came from his lack of knowledge of the software, computer and being comfortable in that domain. He eventually fought back and said he wasn't comfortable working digitally and didn't like the additional work they were forcing upon him that was outside his realm of knowledge. He eventually left to do his own thing because he had already been working on the children's books and recent animated big film.

I see other traditional artists now being forced to do more page layout design and less illustrative design. Once they might have had mastered airbrushes, markers and inks now they are forced into a medium and creative process by the industry employers in effort to save money.

Even though these people excelled at traditional media art and was hired only do this, their employer eventually expected more out of them in the digital realm as downsizing was in the works. It is reasons like this I have always recommended to anyone wanting to develop a career in the art field to really learn as much as possible about the digital side even if your talent lies within traditional skills. Employers expect everyone to be comfortable and knowledgeable about the digital side to make their workflows simple as they value the creative process less and less each year.
