I'm speaking as an outsider here. I work with a few graphic designers where I work, and most of the time we're cool with each other, but sometimes when I ask them to do work for something or another, or give directions/ask for updates/etc., I can sense that they're being quiet about some things. You know that feel when you're suspecting they want to slap you or say something harsh but they're just controlling themselves because you have the power to screw them well and good if they do?

Just so to quell my paranoia a bit, what's something most non-designers don't understand that you wish they did to make both of your lives easier?

I'll make a short list of a few that I think I understand -

Quality work can't be rushed

Listen to them if they say it doesn't look good, they usually know what they're talking about, even if they can't qualify it concretely ("It just feels... wrong")

Slack time is sometimes needed to refresh the brain

Creativity doesn't necessarily follow work hours; there could be nothing coming up in the 9 to 5, but maybe in the wee hours of the morning you'll get hit by an amazing idea

Just because you know a few filters or a couple lines of code doesn't mean you can huffily talk like a know it all

I write for a living, so I can understand the creativity bit, but the rest...

I'm sure there are also a few blog posts floating around in the Internet about this topic! I'll share them later when I do find them.

Here's one for the list... "Give your designer every thing needed or required in the design up front. Adding things to something already laid out and designed is likely only to make things a mess."

I don't want to be mean, but things like this pop up a lot in my mind...

I really should fix this post up but here's a post from before about horrible things clients tend to do: http://www.youthedesigner.com/2007/11/30/20-horrible-habits-of-clie...

Here's a similar thread in another forum - though it talks about web design in particular, some things apply to graphic designers as well: http://www.webmastertalkforums.com/web-design-discussion/4073-what-...
