What graphic designers used to do in 1992 and what they do now?

I did a research about what changed in the last 20 years. It showed that a designer now needs to know far more than good sense of just design and sketching. For example knowing CSS, HTML , animation or video editing are becoming part of our job.

I created an infographics to compare these two. If you can add to the list please feel free to do

That was a feast to take in! haha...

Can't believe no one's commented on this yet! It's an interesting visual you've created here Saya, you really don't realise how much a modern graphic designer has to take on board these days until you've seen a visual representation of it.

I guess as technology changes and the demand at which the Internet is becoming the main source of business, recreation and of course commerce. I am so bad at HTML and CSS, my brain can't comprehend its complexity haha...

I know designers are not good with CSS and HTML but looks like it becomes a part of design

That is great research. I graduated in 1991. Your correct, back then design fundamentals was taught more, not so much now. Also technology and the internet has made designers faster and more productive at what they do. I remember if I needed some inspiration, I would have to go to my local library and search through books and magazine, now the internet does all that.

I still firmly believe that one can not be a master at all that you have mentioned. I specialize mostly in print and although I have done some webdesign, I prefer to stick to what I do best. I run my own business so if I need anything that requires a specialty outside of mine, then I will outsource or keep a nice ground of people to network with. What sadly is happening now is students who are graduating, think just because they have been taught web design, print, etc... that they are good at all of them. This rarely is the case.

Sean,

You are right. There is no way to become master in all of these. Design is our strenght and we should stick to it

But need to have at least good understanding about other parts.

wow that was a lot to take it. It is pretty shocking how drastically design has advanced.

The best part of it is that I don't have to trap my colors in illustrator and pdf is amazing.
