When you get a client request for designing a "Nice" brochure in "MS Word"!

Recently I get many requests from my clients to design a "NICE" brochure in MS Word. It makes my job harder since not only MS Word is not a graphic software, but also I have to think and plan twice about how to design background images in AI or PSD and inserting images into MS Word to look professional. The reason clients asks is, they want to be able to edit it and don't have any other software. What is your answer to clients when they want you to have a "unique" brochure in MS Word?

I can see where the client is coming from, obviously it gives them the opportunity to make changes themselves, however depending on what their brochure is going to be about a MS word document may not do it justice.

It would be a good idea to insert your work from AI or PSD into word to make it look more professional, but are they still going to be able to make adjustments?

What is the brochure about? How many adjustments would they need to make? Is this a daily, weekly, monthly change?

The reason they want it MS it to update it every month with new information and print in-house

I created the design in AI and PSD and inserted in the different sections as an image or background. However, some features can not be used for example bleed.

i usually try to talk the client into letting me design the layout in InDesign or Quark. if they're not up for that then i turn down the project. it's just not worth the aggravation.

Haha, I got same task last month. I think it is a different task for a else person. Any way a good experience it is we can easily add our own text and images to personalize our brochure design. For clients we are not suppose to say anything.

Personally I think you could offer the client the brochure in PowerPoint instead of word cause it makes it still editable cause is still  MS Office and easier for you to make a good layout (background) and use text box to give format to the text. you can even set up the size of the page that way even if has to be done manually you can add the bleed and the crop marks.

I would encourage them to have you do it in illustrator or indesign and offer them lets say 3 free revisions and anything past that will cost them $ an hour or revisiion. Also tell them for printing that is the industry standard to go. Some just want to save money and this is their cheap way of doing things, if it is a client like that, only do it if the money is good. Sorry but I have had my share of clients like that, I am not afraid to say that they are more work and heartburn LOL

Instend of using ms word.... I reither use coreldrew or adobe illustrator and later install d software for the client incase of editing

I have never been in this type of situation. But if I did, I would create the design (with no type) in Illustrator first. I would then place it into the MS word document and add text there. That way, the client could edit the information in the design. However, you would have to know what type of alterations they would possibly want to do in the future. It would work out fine if they were just needed to alter dates, names, and locations. But if they were going to change all the content, I would offer them a discount on future designs if they were to come to me for alterations. If they take the discount, there is really no point in doing the design in MS word. Also, would you be giving your client full or limited rights?
