Networking and Exhibiting in New York

I have been in New York for about a year and a half now, and have had the pleasure of meeting some great people and even having the chance to exhibit my work at Webster Hall last winter for an Art Exhibit. Since then, it would seem that the good jobs are few and far between, and freelance work has been hard to come by. As the saying goes "It's feast or famine" seems to hold some truth. I have seen many successful artists in publications and online who are exhibiting their works, going to gallery's, and even some who have a studio set up separate from their living quarters. What I am trying desperately to figure out is how to make that jump? Are there groups, or networks that people belong to in order to find these opportunities? Or is it simply a mixture of hard work and luck?

Quite expensive, yes

Annual membership is around $315 ($230 if you've been practicing design for less than four years). I think if you apply for it online you get a discount.

Thanks Jarmaine! A few people had told me about AIGA and I really would like to do it, I just have to bite the initial joining fees which were quite expensive for a yearly membership if I am not mistaken...

Hi Eric, AIGA, the professional association for design, would be one such organization (http://www.aiga.org/), they have local chapters and design job listings, plus a lot of awesome resources and inspiration for designers.
