I’ve been eyeing this photographer for a while now. The way he presents models in his photos and the colors he applies gives his output a surreal feeling. Fortunately, Mox Santos agreed to be interviewed by YouThePhotographer so that we can know more about him.
“I want my photos to have a deep and mysterious feel on it. “
YTP: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Mox: I’m 21 years old, Graphic Designer. Originally I’m a Painter and Illustrator then suddenly fell inlove taking photos. I like classical music. I always wanted to be a chemist but ended up an artist. I like sushi.
YTP: What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
Mox: Accessory huh. Well, I don’t really use tripod, reflectors and flashes. So my favorite is my eyes.
YTP: Did you go to school to study photography?
Mox: Yes, but only for a subject not a course. Didn’t took so long. Just learn the technical and basics.
YTP: How long have you been a photographer?
Mox: Well, I’ve been shooting for 2 years but for me the first year is only just calibrating so I don’t want to state that I’m a photographer from the very start I learn how to click the shutter. So yeah maybe 1 year old as a photographer.
YTP: How would you describe your style?
Mox: My style? I want my photos to have a deep and mysterious feel on it. I don’t do a lot of smiling with my subjects, I want it more candid or the scenario when they are in misery. I don’t really like the vibrant feel, it’s really rare on me. If you would take a look on my works you’ll understand what I’m saying and notice their similarities.
YTP: How do you educate yourself to take better pictures?
Mox: I observe the industry and the circle and make a contrast with them. I browse photos from the Various photographers and get Ideas then put the Ideas together then contemplate how will I gonna execute it properly. I just don’t stop looking for inspirations, read books, magazines. Haha and you know what, when I go to the malls I spend my time not on shopping but looking at their print ads, criticizing and getting Ideas.
YTP: Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?
Mox: Everything is evenly loved but if you will insist, my favorite is gonna be my next shoot. Why? Because I know it’s going to be perfect.
YTP: Whose work has influenced you most?
Mox: Hmm.. Maybe Steven Klein, Steven Meisel and Tim Walker. My gods.
YTP: What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
Mox: One thing. Hmmm.. that it wouldn’t be easy when you enter the Industry. You will want to have the attention of the people but when they are looking at you it wouldn’t be easy you should be aware and careful of every next move you’ll do.
YTP: What advice can you tell to other photographers who are starting their photography career?
Mox: Other photographers are advising you to keep shooting, but for me I would not advice you that. Plan first before shooting. So keep planning then execute. Get some inspiration. Find a reference photographer. Try to be consistent. Don’t compete and compare with other photographers. Everyone has their own style and preference. Don’t be afraid of critics, and always set goals.
