“During the last couple of months, I began every underwater shooting with a sequence of portrait images which were taken at the surface of the water: The model was lying on the floor on the outside of the pool and was looking through the surface into the pool. I was within the pool underwater and shot towards the surface. It was my intention not to show the entire face of the model in order to leave it to the imagination of the viewer and to also emphasize the water surface and its textures. I wanted to bring in some diversity to the pictures and have different textures of the surface. For some images we moved the water at the surface in order to get waves or even bubbles and for some images we barely moved in order to get a calm surface that would reflect the model’s face and skin tones. Further effects derive from the model blowing out air through the nose or the mouth, which formed bubbles. Another cool effect comes from what the water does to long hair which will twist or move in wavy motion.”
