Emotion, skill and action are three things we look for in a good sports photograph. But with fast-paced games and athletes in constant motion, it’s always a challenge for photographers to capture these great moments of human drama. Cameras and lenses of varying formats and lengths are needed depending on the situation and the sport being covered. Having the right timing and angle in addition to possessing patience and a strong understanding of the game are also very important. Finally, to make sports photographs truly alive, photographers experiment with various lighting conditions and make use of techniques such as panning, object isolation and even tone mapping.
