Design Icon: Annie Leibovitz

Photography is one of the fastest rising artistic hobbies in recent years. The advancement of technology in the field of camera making has allowed a lot of people to own a camera and practice the art of photography in their own time and means. But while most of us are just starting with this craft, and basically just learning the ropes, there are those who have stood tall in the world of photography and have left an unmistakable mark in the industry.

One great example of this kind of people is the American portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz. With a portfolio featuring portrait shots of artists like John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Demi Moore, Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga, the family of Barack Obama and even Queen Elizabeth II, it is undeniable that Annie Leibovitz is really a force to be reckoned with the world of photography.

Anna-Lou “Annie” Leibovitz was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on October 2, 1949. She is the third child of U.S. Air force lieutenant colonel Sam Leibovitz. Due to his father’s duty assignments, Leibovitz and her family had to frequently moved to different places; in fact started taking pictures when her family was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam War.

She attended the San Francisco Art Institute where she first tried her hand at painting and later on further developed her craft as a photographer while working various jobs. Her formal career as a photographer started in 1970 when she worked for Rolling Stone magazine. She would then further strengthen her career as a photographer three years later when she was named as chief photographer in the said magazine, a position she had for 10 years.

Aside from her work in Rolling Stones, Leibovitz was also employed by other notable organizations and publications for various photography projects such as Vanity Fair magazine and Disney to name a few. In 2007, she was commissioned by Disney to do a series of portraits with celebrities portraying various Disney characters for the company’s Disney Parks: “Year of a Million Dreams” campaign. This campaign has been an on-going project of Leibovitz and features numerous celebrities the likes of Scarlett Johansson, David Beckham, Johnny Depp, Rachel Weisz, Julianne Moore, Michael Phelps, Jessica Biel, Whoopi Goldberg and Beyoncé to name a few.
